Safe Steps Program

Safe Steps is a trauma-informed, community-based program designed to support Edmontonians affected by hoarding behaviours before their situation escalates into crisis. The program offers early, compassionate, and non-judgmental intervention to reduce harm, improve wellness, and strengthen housing stability.

Through the program, HDFA hopes to:

  • Reduce isolation, stigma, and shame.

  • Improve emotional wellness, confidence, and readiness for change.

  • Enhance home safety and housing stability.

  • Increase system capacity and awareness through professional training.

Participants of the program will receive no-cost in-home declutter coaching and supportive mental health counselling over the course of 1 year.

Eligibility and How to Apply

To be eligible, you must be an adult residing within Edmonton coping with hoarding behaviour. Participants for the program will be decided on a case by case basis; individual circumstance, barriers to access, and readiness for change will all be considered.

Applicants must participate in an interview before being approved for the program.

Program applications will open in October 2026 to those interested in receiving support starting in January 2027. Check back here to apply this fall, or become a part of our mailing list to get notified when applications open.
